Event Details

Despite the advances in tracking large vessels around the world, a gap remains in effectively monitoring and tracking small vessels. Based on Transport Canada’s Safety and Security Regulations (RDIMS No. 2481055), Automatic Identification System (AIS) is only required in “ships on international voyage of 150 tones or more that are carrying more than 12 passengers, and every ship, other than fishing vessels, of 300 tons or more. Also, every ship, other than fishing vessels, of 500 tons or more that is not engaged on an international voyage shall be fitted with AIS.” Vessels that do not meet these size requirements, which we identify here as “small vessels”, can be left unaccounted when monitoring and managing these users in the marine environment.

The purpose of this one and a half days workshop is to engage key stakeholders in discussions involving the monitoring, modelling and applications of small vessels information in Canadian waters.

The objectives of this workshop are:

  • to share experiences in collecting, managing and analyzing small vessels information;
  • to identify and discuss needs with respect to small vessel data from different stakeholder perspectives;
  • to engage with small vessel communities (commercial and private sectors) to discuss opportunities and concerns;
  • identify and coordinate research priorities; and
  • to identify opportunities for collaboration between researchers, government agencies, NGOs and others.
