Event description

Description

In this course, students will learn best practices in regards to submitting their finished films on the festival circuit, the dos and don’ts of knowing how to submit, and what film programmers want to see.

Locally renowned festival programmers Brenda Lieberman and Cameron Macgowan will discuss what filmmakers should have ready when submitting to film festivals and what they look for in sample work and materials (press kits, stills, synopsis etc.) as well as the strategies successful filmmakers implement when researching the best venues for their films to be exhibited on the world’s stage.

Instructors Profile

Brenda Lieberman

Since graduating from Arts & Cultural Management at MacEwan University in 1999, Brenda has positioned herself as a full-time programmer in Calgary. Currently her time is divided between her role as Festival Director, Co-Founder and Programmer for the Calgary Underground Film Festival, and the Programming Manager and Features Programmer for the Calgary International Film Festival. In addition she has been involved with several other start-up film festivals, she curates off-season events and screenings and participates on industry juries and panels internationally.

Early in her career, she worked at the CSIF as Programming Coordinator and worked on various film productions in Calgary in both DGC and IATSE 212, providing her with a well-rounded spectrum of knowledge on how the film industry works from beginning to end. In 2009, Brenda was awarded Avenue magazine’s Top 40 Under 40.


Cameron Macgowan

Cameron is a Calgary-based filmmaker and a lead programmer with the Calgary Underground Film Festival. He is a graduate of the Film/Video program at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. His work has won awards and garnered critical acclaim at international film festivals across the world including SXSW, Fantasia and the Toronto International Film Festival.

Cameron is a member of the Canadian film collective North Country Cinema, the founder of Awkward Silencio Films and is also the Executive Director of NUTV, the University of Calgary Campus Television Station. Recent accomplishments include a 2011 Rosie Award for the screenplay to his film Bad Dad and in 2012, he was selected as a one of Calgary's Top 40 under 40 by Avenue Magazine. His first feature film as writer/director Red Letter Day will be released in Fall 2018.
