Finder's Keepers

Thursday October 18th 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM & Friday October 19th 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Light lunch provided both days.

The finder who becomes the keeper now becomes the quilter. In this fun workshop, which plays around with combining the most unlikely elements, found objects become part of a larger story. Textiles form our starting point, and then it is fair play, stitching together copper and cloth, buttons and branches, or knobs and nails. This juxtaposition is obviously not for any guest-room bed. Instead it becomes a surprising and compelling, three-dimensional piece of textile art.

Surprise yourself with possibilities by creating a piece of art that is both personal and mysterious, one that speaks of roads travelled and stories found, one that becomes the keeper of stories.

Here are some things that you might want to bring:

  • Sea shells from your travels, branches, leaves or any natural material.

  • Any stone or heavier found object (jewelry or a key, for instance) should be no larger than a twoonie..... (I should add that you shouldn’t take anything too precious, as this is a workshop.)

  • If you prefer to work with a sewing machine, you’re welcome to bring your own -- but it's not at all necessary

  • Thread and scissors

  • Pins and needles

  • Scrap pieces of fabric...especially anything that was made by hand (but again nothing so precious that you can’t cut it.)

Having said all that, I will have all those things and more. You will receive everything you need for the full workshop including all framing materials.

A little about the artist - Alice Vander Vennen, born in 1957, in Canada, has worked as a professional artist since 1980. A child of immigrant parents who left war-torn Holland, Alice has used her art to capture stories of loss and hope; courage and strength. First trained as a sculptor at Calvin College, USA, with further training at the Ontario College of Art and Design, Alice now works in three-dimensional assemblage, participating in numerous exhibitions throughout North America. Her work is in public, private and corporate collections both here and abroad
