Finding Hope in the Opioid Crisis - full day workshop

October 20

Lethbridge Lodge, 8:30 am - 4:00 pm, doors open at 8:00

Objectives:

  1. Factors that contribute to the opioid crisis including physician prescribing, industry funded research, guideline development etc.

  2. Understand the neuroscience of addiction and trauma-informed care

  3. Practical skills to help providers manage complex patients, including refusal skills, safer prescribing, opioid de-prescribing and substance use disorder.

  4. To prioritize self-care as a necessary component of providing effective care in the opioid crisis

There is an urgent need to address the opioid crisis in a different way.  To identify solutions, we must understand the conditions that contribute to and maintain the cycle of addiction. This interactive and evidence based workshop will offer front line providers the skills to use for their patients and themselves.

Dr. Rupa Patel is a Family Physician who currently works at Kingston Community Health Centre, Kingston Regional Cancer Centre and as an Assistant Professor with the Queens University Department of Family Medicine. She is a passionate advocate for responsible opioid prescribing after inheriting a practice with many patients on high dose opioids.  She has been with this group of patients for the past 6 years and has extensive experience with opioid tapering.

Dr. Meredith MacKenzie is a Family Physician at Street Health Centre in Kingston, Ontario and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at Queen's University.   She has provided primary care and opioid dependency treatment for the past 17 years to people who use drugs, those recently released from incarceration, those who are homeless or marginally housed, people involved in street work and high risk youth. In 2015, she developed an opioid overdose prevention and naloxone access program for Kingston.
