About this Event

** If you register for the “The Gift of Trees - Baskets, Food, Rope & Glue” workshop on, Saturday Sept 21, receive a $31 refund (happens after initial registration) and pay only $139 for both workshops.

For most of human history, knowing how to create fire and purify water with only what we can find in nature, has been an essential skill to our survival.

It envokes, confidence, a sense of empowerment, and a connection to the land we live on and our ancient ancestry.

In the modern world, you never know when these skills may be valuable or even save your life. Whether lost in the woods, caught in a natural disaster, or wanting to past skills on to the next generation or impress your friends in the outdoors, this workshop will take your fire and water skills to the next level.

Topics for the day will include:

  • Learning multiple different fire lighting techniques, including traditional flint & steel, Ferro rod strikers, hand-drill, bow-drill, and more.
  • Learning techniques for starting fires in different weather conditions and habitats.
  • Learning the different burning properties of trees and plants so you can choose the best materials depending on what you want to do with your fire.
  • Learn the foundations of water filtration and what you need to consider under different circumstances.
  • Learn to make a waterproof container out of bark to boil water in if you do not have a steel pot.

This course will be taught by Wild Muskoka team member Chris Gilmour, a wilderness skills instructor and naturalist with 12+ years teaching and guiding experience.
