Event Details

The First Voices Project brings together indigenous youth from Atlantic Canada and the Global South to share their stories through artistic expression. Dancers, musicians, poets, and visual artists, representing both contemporary and traditional styles, will gather together to perform and host workshops as part of the First Voices International Arts Festival on October 2nd, 2010 in Halifax, NS. In addition to First Nations and Inuit artists from Atlantic Canada, we will once again welcome individuals from Botswana, the Philippines, Guatemala, Chile, and Honduras.

Workshops will be held at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia with interested youth (ages 14-20) which will allow the First Voices artists to share their indigenous culture and emphasize the centrality of the arts as means of expression. The theme of the workshops is ‘I have a story to tell’.......where participants will delve into the various artistic mediums of dance, music, video and visual arts to learn about expression and stories of indigenous and Diaspora youth. Full-day workshop cost is $15 and includes lunch and a ticket to the evening performance.

The festival will be capped off with a 7pm evening performance at the McNally Theatre at Saint Mary's University showcasing indigenous talent from around the world. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for youth.
