Event description

Description

Along with our partners, Flagstaff County will be presenting “Flagstaff Celebrates Success.” This will be an evening to celebrate local businesses and volunteers that make the Flagstaff Region unique. This year the evening’s keynote speaker will be David Segal, co-founder of DAVIDsTEA, Retail Visionary and  Branding Expert.

In 2008, David Segal was a 27-year-old tea loving entrepreneur, with a vision to redefine the tea experience. He imagined a lively tea shop, with flavours and products that extended far beyond the basics. Today, DAVIDsTEA has hundreds of stores throughout North America. Forbes named DAVIDsTEA one of the 25 most innovative consumer and retail brands in the world; Strategy awarded them Brand of the Year; and they have been featured in The Wall Street Journal, Women’s Wear Daily, The Globe and Mail, and Fast Company. What does it take to build a brand like DAVIDsTEA in such a short period of time? Segal takes audiences through the entrepreneurial journey, delving into the brand experience, growth at scale, managing the digital and retail waters, and more.

The first DAVIDsTEA shop opened in 2008 on Queen Street West in Toronto. Segal turned to Craigslist for his early hires, valuing finding “smart, passionate people” over those with specific experience. His team was laser-focused on customer service, satisfaction, and a philosophy that every customer is welcome and important.

As the company grew — opening more than 25 stores a year — DAVIDsTEA announced a $14 million minority investment from the Highland Consumer Fund. Following this move, Segal continued in an executive role, overseeing the entire product innovation, buying, marketing, and corporate culture. He has recently stepped down from the post.

In June 2015, DAVIDsTEA made a “hot debut” on the NASDAQ. Today, the company has over 180 stores in both Canada and the USA.
