Event Details

Muscle wire is a shape memory alloy. When a current is applied to it, it will contract and bend into a pre-defined shape. Students will learn how to use Flexinol (a type of muscle wire) with their Arduino projects to create movement. Muscle wire is especially useful for those interested in creating movement in their wearable projects, as it is lightweight. In this class, you will learn how to shape Flexinol wire, the best ways to implement Flexinol into a project, and how to use it in combination with an Arduino.

You do not need to know much about Arduino to take this class. Basic Arduino code will be provided, and the instructor can help with any issues that arise.

About Marisa:

Marisa Ranalli is an electronic textile artist. She focuses on relating interaction with her work to themes of deep sea life, human biology, and light. Marisa’s intimate knowledge of textile processes and construction allows her to integrate electronic components into textiles in an aesthetically pleasing and functional manner. Through design consideration and intricate construction, the electronic components become part of the textile, making the distinction unrecognizable. You can view Marisa's work at
