 A Grand Journey

Mistaken identity, sibling rivalry, and love at first sight are the comic themes of eighteen-year- old Alessandro Scarlatti’s first opera, premiered in Rome in 1679. Despite papal decree against such scandals as women on stage, and a ban on the church’s employment of theatre musicians, the public couldn’t resist the charms of this new, youthful voice of opera. Gli equivoci nel sembiante (Folly in Love) is an intimate comedy for four singers and orchestra that became a hit that toured throughout the regions of Italy for decades.

* A Nota Bene Baroque Players and Capella Intima co-production.

Nota Bene Baroque Players

NBBP LogoThe Nota Bene Baroque Players (NBBP) present concerts of 17th and 18th-century music on period instruments. They showcase the full emotional spectrum of classical music from the sublime and serious to light-hearted, fun and earthy, while balancing masterworks by the major Baroque composers, lesser-known works by the same, and rarely-heard works by obscure composers.

(NBBP History) The Nota Bene Period Orchestra was founded in 2001 by Daniel Zondervan, Michael Purves-Smith and Richard Cunningham. Their intention was to treat Waterloo Region music lovers to 17th- and 18th-century music as audiences experienced it at the time. The orchestra was renamed to Nota Bene Baroque Players (NBBP) in the early Fall of 2011 to reflect the ensemble's flexibility in size and celebrate each player as a virtuoso in his/her own right.
