Food Matters: Connecting the Roots of Food Security In KFL&A

Food Matters is an important opportunity for community members to engage in a public discussion around key issues in food security. You are invited to consider the strategies that can be implemented by our community to address immediate food security needs, build capacity to become more food secure and promote the policies needed to develop a sustainable and just regional food system.
Agenda for the Food Matters Public Workshop:
12:30 pm - 1:00 pm:
Community Meet and Greet: An opportunity to connect with others to learn about local and regional food security issues and opportunities for collaborating on initiatives to address food security in our community
1:00 pm - 1:20 pm:
Welcome and Introduction: A brief introduction on The Food Policy Council for KFL&A and an overview of food security initiatives in the region.
1:20 pm - 2:20 pm
Panel Presentations and Discussion: Local community leaders will highlight their work and the opportunities and challenges they face in building a food secure KFL&A. presentations will be given by Ayla Fenton, Toni Pickard and David Townsend.
2:20 pm - 2:40 pm
2:40 pm to 3:40 pm
Working Groups: All in attendance are invited to discuss and seek answers to the question of what households and communities in KFL&A can do to help build a safe, secure, just and sustainable food system. The working groups will consider a number of broad themes such as basic income guarantee, local food production, the role of community services, and the health and wellness of people in our communities.
3:40 pm – 4:00 pm:
Workshop Summary and Outcomes: Shared information and ideas will be summarized to focus action on the policies and initiatives needed to address the major obstacles to food security in our community.

The Council’s mandate is to work towards the KFL&A Food Charter’s purpose of creating a secure and sustainablefood system for our region.
