Description

International law recognizes dozens of human rights, including the right to vote, to a free and accessible primary education, to adequate food, clothing and housing, and to a healthy environment. International law also recognizes many rights including the right to not be subject to genocide, to apartheid, to torture, and to arbitrary arrest and detention.

In our world of deep inequalities, across countries and societies, are human rights really universal? And if they are, does the existence of human rights make a difference, for example, to the plight of a Rohingya family in north Myanmar today?

To discuss these critical issues with us, Professor Jack Donnelly joins the Salt Spring Forum for a special 2017 Forum Members salon.

Jack Donnelly is the Andrew W. Mellon Professor of International Relations at the Graduate School of International Studies at the University of Denver. His books include Universal Human Rights in Theory and Practice, International Human Rights, and Realism in International Relations.

Register today to reserve your place and receive directions. Donations of $20 or more are recommended at the door – to help the Forum cover the salon costs. To attend you must be a current Forum member. If you are not and want to attend, please purchase a 2017 Forum membership (valid as well for the rest of 2018) and then register.
