Basic Financial Fundamentals for Non-Profit Board & Management
Are you involved in the financial operations of your non-profit? Do you work with accountants and treasurers on a regular basis and want to know more about the roles & responsibilities involved? Do you worry if you’re missing something important when it comes to finances? Part 1 of this 2-part seminar series will take you through the basics of non-profit financial management including working with CRA, working with your auditor, working with your Treasurer, best practices for the ED and non-financial staff, risk management, privacy issues for board and staff, and understanding basic financial terminology. Part 2 of this series will take you more a bit more in-depth and will cover off budgeting basics for board and funders, charitable tax receipting, T3010 Charity information return, structuring a best-practices financial team, and finances and human resources management. You will leave with practical, implementable tools to strengthen your non-profit’s management of financial resources. This seminar is appropriate for board and staff from all areas of a non-profit who need to increase their comfort and knowledge in the financial arena.

Born and raised in Victoria BC, Susan has devoted her career to providing meaningful, practical and understandable financial advice to her clients.
As a Senior Manager in the Independent Business Group, Susan spent fourteen years with Grant Thornton Chartered Accountants. She was instrumental in developing the local firm’s small business advisory and bookkeeping services departments and spent many years as the audit manager for a large variety of local charitable organizations.
In 2002 Susan joined the Victoria Foundation as their Finance Director. As one of Canada’s largest Community Foundations, Susan played an instrumental role in the growth of the Foundation’s assets and the organization’s presence in the local charitable community. The role focused on the financial oversight of the Foundation’s endowment and included a national role in the community foundation movement, working closely with BC’s First Nations groups on specific trusts and the review and updating of the Victoria Foundation Act in 2009.
In 2011 Susan opened her financial consulting practice. She provides financial mentorship, training, bookkeeping and controllership services to both non-profit and for-profit organizations. Susan’s outlook is to empower her clients by training them to understand their financial processes and enhance their efficiencies. Susan is a regular presenter with Volunteer Victoria and many other charitable organizations on a wide variety of topics impacting the non-profit sector.
