Event Details

Failure is alienating and isolating. Dialogue is the ultimate human interest activity and a remedy for alienation in society.

The failure narrative is catching on around the world and it is time to maintain the consistency and bring it home to the Waterloo ecosystem, again. In our start-up ecosystem, it is easy to believe that success is defined as funding, number of speaking engagements, limited sleep, presence in the media and being "busy"...while failure is defined as the lack of it.

Join us for a 1-hour, trademark Dialogue Xchange experience, where we'll bring Waterloo's community together to redefine failure, boldly celebrate our worst blunders, build our failure endurance and share lived experiences that end with learning and resiliency. This dialogue relates to both personal and professional failures, both of which are of paramount importance.

By bringing the right people together, we hope to bridge the gap in perspectives between all stakeholders, allowing them to recognize how people with different roles in our community perceive failure and reflect on how we can de-stigmatize failure (or address the negative emotions associated with it), using a systems approach.

We will also be showcasing a first look of a pop up art installation called "The Failure Box" that aims to provide participants a chance to shed the weight of failure through art. After this event, it will be moved to main campus for a week, as a social experiment.

..more to come soon, stay tuned!

Will food and drink be provided?

Who will be at this event?

Something that differentiates dialogue from conversation and communication is the stakeholders in the room. We make a cautious effort in all that we do, to include the key stakeholders in the dialogue so that they're actively listening to how other stakeholders feel and what their thoughts are. For a topic like Failure, it truly extends and applies to everyone. We aim to bring together entrepreneurs (and aspiring ones), students, professors and start-up advisors, among other community members.

What kind of experiences constitute as failure?

It all depends on how you define it and how an experience made you feel. Individuals with interest in attending this event, may define failure as: not completing something, giving up, not receiving funding for their start-up, letting their team down, not taking care of yourself or those around you, feeling embarassed about something. The experiences are endless and the idea is to open our doors to this dialogue, to everyone.

I really want to attend this event but I don't feel as comfortable sharing. Is it still possible for me to attend?

Yes! The Dialogue Xchange experience is all about creating a safe, comfortable space for those who want to share but also for those who want to listen and learn. There is no obligation to share.

Is the building and Greenhouse innovation space accessible?

Yes. We have ramps and elevators for easy-access.

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

No, this event is open to all community members.

    The Dialogue Xchange

St. Paul's GreenHouse is the first and only live-in campus-linked accelerator in Canada focused on social innovation and entrepreneurship. They believe the live-in model enhances the acceleration of startups and social change initiatives (from idea to launch and beyond), through providing dedicated space to students for collaboration, weekly programming, mentorship peer-to-peer support and access to funding.

The Dialogue Xchange is a St. Paul's Greenhouse-incubated and Ontario government-endorsed social movement, with a global mission rooted in building stronger communities, bridging the dialogue gap and normalizing "taboo" or "difficult" topics, within and beyond borders. We believe the world needs more dialogue, less communication. From Mental Health and Gender Equity to Menstruation and Islamophobia, our dialogue lab meticulously researches and curates dialogues (alongside stakeholders) that bring the right people together, in the right way and space, at the right time, to achieve outcomes.
