Retreat Description

The training in this retreat will emphasize intensive guided meditations in mindfulness, awareness, love and compassion, Tonglen, Enriching Presence, Windhorse, penetrating insight, as well as practices that transform negative energy within ourselves into positive energy. There will also be Dharma talks, discussion groups, and individual interviews with Frank.

This retreat will be a journey through the stages of practicing with our hope and fear: abandoning our habit of identifying with them, transforming them into fearless awareness by working directly with their energy and seeing them as naturally free and pure from the very beginning.

First we will do meditation practices that further develop our strength to sit with our physical and emotional discomfort, and to see the transparency of our habitual patterns. Letting go of our compulsive identification with these patterns brings a growing sense of kindness and openness toward ourselves.

Then, we deliberately extend this sense of kindness toward others who share the world with us, and train ourselves to witness and feel the suffering that others experience as if it were our own. This not only opens our heart but strengthens our being even further.

Next we will be guided through and learn practices where we relate more directly with the vast energetic reality of the world. This living energy exists both within our body-mind, and within all the phenomena around us. By abruptly overpowering the beliefs and fixations that bind us to a life that is only partly alive, these practices will teach us to connect with this energy so that we will experience our world in such a fresh way that we will be fully alive, awake, and complete in our own being.

The teachings and practices in this retreat will serve to help us familiarize ourselves with our Natural State as a real, personal experience. They will also help us sustain our enthusiasm for meditation, and encourage sudden glimpses of fresh insight into the Natural State itself.
