About this event
Our 2021/22 Composer-In-Residence, Cree composer and flutist Jessica McMann, has written a new work for flute, alto flute, violin, viola, and piano. This haunting commissioned work explores logging, old-growth forests, the boreal lung forest, and how the rights of Indigenous women across Turtle Island are intrinsically tied to the forests and to nature. Key themes include matriarch trees, the land as a witness, and the continued fight for Indigenous women’s justice. For this special free concert, Jessica collaborates with Anishinaabe pianist Beverley McKiver and Cree/Nehiyaw violist Karen Shepherd for a wonderful program of original compositions including Jessica's residency composition world premiere.
