About this event
What better way to spend an afternoon than curling up with your community (virtually, in the comfort of your own home) learning a new skill? Come join us for our Pride Workshop Series!
Flamingo Market presents a FREE DIY Weaving on a DIY Loom Workshop with Gabrielle Trach on GDTV!
In this workshop participants will learn how to weave a piece from start to finish. Using everyday supplies (cardboard, string/yarn, and scissors), participants will learn how to make their own cardboard loom. From there, participants will be taught basic weaving terminology, plain weave, as well as some finishing techniques. There will be opportunities for Q&A as well as troubleshooting throughout the workshop.
This workshop will include a brief introduction about Gabrielle and her practice, as well as a 20-30 minute overview of the history of weaving, prominent artists, as well as contemporary practices and uses for weaving.
Gabrielle is a maker based in Toronto, Canada. Her work explores the relationship between clothing and identity, clothing sustainability, and the environmental impact of the textile industry. Her practice is informed by research and theory surrounding fashion, clothing, and identity. She received a Master of Arts in Fashion from Ryerson University, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from NSCAD University, where she majored in photography and minored in textiles. Her work has been exhibited throughout Canada in solo and group exhibitions. Check out Gabrielle Trach Designs on Flamingo Market here!
A supply list for people following along:
- ruler
- pen, pencil, or other mark-making tool
- scissors (for cutting cardboard, as well as yarn)
- thread/yarn snips (optional)
- Xacto knife (optional)
- cardboard (approx 8"x10" recommended, but can be larger or smaller; the size of the cardboard piece will determine the finished size of your work. If you want a larger piece, get a larger piece of cardboard, or smaller cardboard for a smaller finish piece).
- surface to cut cardboard on (cutting board, or a self-healing mat if you have one). You can also cut your cardboard with scissors, if you don't have an Xacto knife or a surface to cut cardboard on.
- a light to medium (fingering to DK) weight yarn for the warp of your piece
- fibre for weaving the weft of your piece (yarn**, strips of fabric, paper, or any other materials you might like to incorporate into your weaving; creativity and exploration are encouraged! Note: really fine yarns will take longer to see results with, whereas bulkier yarns will weave up quickly)
- tapestry needle for weaving
- masking/painters tape
