Event description

Description

In this three-hour workshop, held in the professional ceramics studio at Cedar Ridge Creative Centre, participants will learn basic techniques and experience the unique qualities of clay. Each participant will create a small sculpture that will be fired and available for pick up at the Doris McCarthy Gallery after the workshop. No experience is required and all materials will be provided. Participants must be over the age of 16 to participate.

Space limited, registration is required. Please note that the same workshop is being offered at two different times (morning: 9 am - 12 pm & afternoon: 1 - 4 pm), please sign up for only one session.

The Doris McCarthy Gallery is excited to work with Cedar Ridge Creative Centre to offer this off-site workshop. Run by the City of Toronto, Cedar Ridge Creative Centre is an art centre and gallery located in a historic mansion in one of Scarborough's underserved communities -- Kingston-Galloway/Orton Park. The arts education and engagement opportunities offered by Cedar Ridge enhance the livability and prosperity of the Scarborough community.

This workshop is presented in conjunction with the Doris McCarthy Gallery exhibition Earthlings (November 1, 2017 - January 27, 2018), featuring visionary ceramic sculpture and works on paper, produced both individually and collaboratively by seven contemporary artists: Roger Aksadjuak, Shuvinai Ashoona, Pierre Aupilardjuk, Shary Boyle, Jessie Kenalogak, John Kurok, and Leo Napayok. Otherworldly, surreal, magically figurative, and underpinned by complex narratives, the works in this exhibition are the products of a range of deeply personal practices that are informed by idiosyncratic realities and myths, real and imagined spaces, sensuality, and spirituality. Curated by Shary Boyle in collaboration with Shauna Thompson, organized and circulated by Esker Foundation. Generously supported by the Toronto Arts Council, Ontario Arts Council and U of T's Affinity Partner MBNA.
