Description

Indigenous Cultural Competency Training is an open invitation for youth between the ages of 18-29 who are looking for an opportunity to engage within a training format aimed at promoting awareness regarding Indigenous peoples of Canada. This session is open to both Indigenous and Non-Indigenous youth to share a space, participate in dialogue and actively engage within an interactive learning environment.

The trainer for the session is Michael Etherington Cultural Program Manager at the Native Canadian Centre of Toronto who will facilitate from 09:30 to 03:30 PM. Based upon a high volume of requests and demand from youth there will be a free training session for youth to attend and be an active participant in Indigenous Cultural Competency Training.

In the session the main themes will be discussed but not limited to:

  • Terminology – Aboriginal, Indigenous, Native, Indian (Status – Non, Status), First Nation
  • Pre-Confederate (Peace and Historical) and Post Confederate Treaties (Numbered Treaties 1-11, Comprehensive Land Claim, Specific Claim);
  • Assimilation Policy in Canada (Indian Act, Reserve System, Residential Schools, The Sixties Scoop);
  • Cultural Awareness and Sensitivity regarding Indigenous peoples and reconciliation frameworks within Canada;
  • Review of reports from the Truth and Reconciliation 94 Calls to Action, Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples (RCAP)

Note: Please bring your ID and Admission ticket for the session.

This will be open on a first come first serve basis with a limit of 60 seats per session for August 23 and August 30. By attending the session it is with intent of NCCT that information and dialogue established within the setting will promote education for youth, young professionals and students.
