Working Together: Multi-Partner Creative Space Projects

Presenters: Alexandra Badzak, President & CEO of the Ottawa Art Gallery and Tam-Ca Vo-Van, Director of Galerie SAW Gallery

When: Wednesday, March 27, 2019 @ 12:00 p.m.

Partnering with other organizations inside and outside the sector adds sustainability and support for arts organizations taking on a creative space building project. More and more we are seeing increasing collaboration and cross-sectoral partnerships in new creative spaces, like Arts Court in downtown Ottawa.

Join Alexandra Badzak, President & CEO of the Ottawa Art Gallery and Tam-Ca Vo-Van, Director of Galerie SAW Gallery as they share their successes with partnering with a hotel and their municipality to support the renovation of Arts Court and their visual art spaces. Alexandra and Tam-Ca will present their learnings and strategies in working with partners outside the sector as well as working alongside other arts organizations in Arts Court to support everyone’s capital project goals.

This webinar is for arts managers interested in learning more about cross-sectoral partnerships for creative space projects. There will be time for questions and discussion with presenters following their presentations.

This webinar will be available with closed captioning and available as a transcript after the live session. If you require additional accommodations to participate, please contact

Background on the Ottawa Art Gallery: The OAG is a non-profit operated, municipally owned art gallery committed to the acquisition, presentation, interpretation and dissemination of art for the benefit of the citizens of Ottawa and abroad. In 2008, the OAG announced its intention to expand and in 2015 construction began on the Arts Court Revitalization Project: a unique city-building project that expanded the OAG and Arts Court by utilizing vacant City-owned land and integrating it with complementary private sector investment and development, including a mixed-use hotel and condominium tower.

The new OAG will welcome the world to the first mixed-use gallery, hotel and condo project in Canada. At five times its current size, the new facility will stretch a full city block and provide unparalleled access to its collections, including the art of our region. Dedicated facilities for public and school programming lectures, and activities will continue to ensure the lives of all community members.

Background on Galerie SAW Gallery: Based in downtown Ottawa, Galerie SAW Gallery is a non-profit artist-run centre dedicated to the presentation of contemporary art. In 1989, Galerie SAW Gallery and Club SAW moved into the historic Arts Court building. Opening in early 2018, Galerie SAW Gallery expanded to 15,000 square feet over two levels as part of the City of Ottawa’s Arts Court Redevelopment Project. The new SAW includes expanded galleries, an archive and library, an international artist studio, a licensed multi-disciplinary venue and a renovated courtyard to accommodate festivals and screenings. The new Club SAW will be able to accommodate much larger audiences. New state of the art lighting, sounds and video equipment will allow us to present a wide range of culture events.

ArtsBuild Ontario is proud to present The Learning Series, a collection of learning opportunities for arts facilities around ABOs core programs, including SpaceFinder, the Creative Spaces Mentoring Network, and Asset Planner for the Arts.

The Learning Series is funded by the Department of Canadian Heritage and Canada Council for the Arts.
