Description

Canada (ˈkænədə/; French: [ka.na.da]) is a country in the northern half of North America. Its ten provinces and three territories extend from the Atlantic to the Pacific and northward into the Arctic Ocean, covering 9.98 million square kilometres (3.85 million square miles), making it the world's second-largest country by total area and the fourth-largest country by land area.

RENNIE FOSTER / RF (Canada) / Soiree (Detroit)

Rennie Foster has been a well respected figure in the Canadian music and art community since he was just a teenager. He influenced many as an early pioneer of the Hip-Hop / B-Boy movement and later the House Music and Techno / Rave scene. His graffiti escapades documented in several books on the subject. His musical career began as a member of "Sound Advice", one of the first Hip Hop groups to emerge in the late 80's from Western Canada. Members and affiliates of this group went on to form the award winning act "Swollen Members", and Rennie went on to create a prolific solo career focused on underground dance music and culture.

Rennie relocated to Tokyo Japan near the beginning of the millennium and became an important part of the Japanese club scene, playing all over Japan in venues like Womb, ageHa, Yellow, Unit, Air, and festivals such as Nagisa. Constant travel around Japan, Rennie maintained regular residencies in Tokyo, Kyoto and Shizuoaka. Rennie was consistently ranked in the top 50 DJs in Japan by LOUD Magazine, a very rare honour for a foreigner in Japan, and for three years maintained a DJ chart in the monthly print magazine.

In 2011, Rennie moved back to Canada, and is now based in the city of Vancouver, British Columbia, where he runs his RF label and studio. He continues his three year residency at the city’s best known after-hours, Gorg-O-Mish, and plays consistently as a guest DJ around North America. He is also a resident DJ at Rifflandia Festival, having played every year since his return to Canadian soil. He has played Manitoba Electronic Music Exhibition, Bass Coast Festival, Tall Tree Festival, Tec-Troit festival and many venues in Detroit, also an illegal warehouse party in Brooklyn, among many other varied events. He is also often featured on speaking panels and workshops attached to these festivals due to his outspoken and seasoned public speaking abilities. A true "DJ's DJ" who doesn't follow the usual rulebook.

Rennie Foster has released with Detroit labels such as Transmat, Motech, Soiree, Subject Detroit, Wallshaker, Night Vision, Teknotika and other classic techno labels like Laurent Garnier’s seminal F- Communications, Monoid, and Synewave NYC. Rennie's first full length album "The War of Art" (2007) made waves for the cover design by GLMN (Alexander Gelman) of MoMA/The Smithsonian etc., known for his cutting edge album designs for artists like Blonde Redhead. The album also featured the underground hit, "Falling Skyward", notably remixed by Kompakt artist, Kaito (Hiroshi Watanabe). Rennie's second LP "Blood Sugar" (2010) was released on Italy's Rebirth label and featured and cover design by Hiroshi Watanabe, by then a regular collaborator.

Rennie is most recognized for his underground anthem "Devil's Water" released from Rebirth Records and has been featured several times in publications like DJ Magazine UK, Mixmag, Mixer, XLR8R, Trax (France), Remix (Japan), Freeze (Greece) and championed heavily by crossover tastemakers such as Pete Tong, Sasha, Hernan Cattaneo and James Holden. His collaboration with MC Moka Only (ex. Swollen Members) "Connect Like Four" was remixed by Samuel L. Session, Uner and members of Cobblestone Jazz and was the most charted track on Resident Advisor for April, 2011. He also had an underground hit in 2011 with "Savior" featuring the late Detroit legend, Aaron Carl on vocals and massive remix by Coyu and Edu Imbernon.

Rennie has remixed artists such as Swayzak, Altern 8, DJ Bone, Deepchild, John Beltran, Jaun Atkins, Orlando Voorn, DJ 3000 and has been remixed by a who's who of house and techno music such as James Zabiela, Kiki, Uner, Mark Broom, Claude Young, Rodriguez Jr./Youngsters, G-Pal, Dex Nomadico (UR), Dave Dresden, etc. His tracks appear on mix CDs by the likes of Kevin Saunderson, Larry Heard, Trentmoller and Derrick May.

Rennie is currently focused on running his signature label, RF. The imprint features music by both upcoming artists like Spin Fidelity, Volksfruede and So Kobayashi, alongside well known players like Orlando Voorn, Amir Alexander, and Nubian Mindz. 2017 Will see the release of Rennie’s third full length studio album “Game of 100 Ghosts”, featuring tracks like “Flotilla” released on vinyl through German label Ornaments, and as a special limited Transmat 45” through Jack White’s Third Man label. Also “Conscious Basics” available on vinyl only through the Japanese label, TH Pressings, alongside new and unreleased work. Game of 100 Ghosts, like Rennie’s other LP’s features artwork from a legend in the game, Abdul Haqq. Haqq, who has produced artwork for Underground Resistance, Drexciya, and many others, shaping the visual image of what is known today as “Detroit Techno”.
