Description

Fridays For Future Global Climate Rally and Teach-In

On Friday September 20th 12-3pm, youth and adults around the world will come together for a global day of action demanding climate action-justice-care now. In Toronto, we invite you to a special rally. Our rally will also be a “teach-in”: a learning space for children and youth, adults and elders to support each other in becoming better speakers for the earth, water, life.

The focus, chosen by FridaysforFuture Toronto organizers: How to talk to adults about climate change? Specifically, our parents and family, teachers, and politicians. FridaysforFuture knows that “it’s time for grown-ups to hear us and act” …but what are effective ways to talk to adults that will make them listen? That inspire them to act? To be the supporters we need?

Want to be a Teach-In Supporter?
Thank you! There are 2 types of supporters we are looking for:

1. Youth Facilitator-Apprentices:
Are you a striking youth who wants to run teach-ins? Do you want to be a facilitator of meaningful conversations? Join us as apprentices and learn how to hold down a teach-in by helping us run the show on the 20th!

What’s the commitment?
1) Click "Register" and share your information.
2) Join us for a training session online September 9th at 4pm (or watch the video later if you can’t make it!)
3) Be present on September 20th: 11:30am-4pm

2. Small Group Leaders:
We are asking for help to run small group workshops during the teach-in. The first half of the time will be facilitated as a large group, and then we will split the space into small groups to run short focused workshops on three audience targets; how to talk to: parents and family, teachers, and politicians.

Who are we looking for? We are looking for people with experience facilitating, and with climate change communications. We are also looking for people who are parents, teachers, or political staff/successful advocates.

What’s the commitment?
1) Click "Register" and share your information.

2) Join us on September 20th 12-3pm and run a 30-min workshop 3 times (three rotations of new participants): In small groups, we will be sharing 1-2 communication tactics on the topic and giving space for people to role-play/practice those tactics. If you have an activity to share, you are invited to lead your space as you see fit. If you want to facilitate but don’t have a specific tactic, we will provide you with activities to lead. And we’ll provide a basic guide/itinerary for the day.

We invite a diversity of activities, from play-based and drama facilitation to sharing researched tactics and role-playing. We are looking to inspire conversations that are open-minded, focused on problem solving/solutions, and that invite adults into partnership with youth in climate action-justice-care.

Optional: we will provide a 45 min training on the evening of September 17th for anyone who wants to facilitate and wants support stepping into the role.

Thank you,

Sharrae Lyon and Roxy Cohen
