Description

10 a.m. to 12 noon, our professionals panel discuss the business of writing and offer insights on getting your work into the right hands. From freelance to self-publishing to micro presses to mainstream publishing, panelists inform & engage the audience with a panel discussion and Q&A.

1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m., writers can book a one-on-one session with individual panellists to pitch a manuscript, discuss a story idea or discover the best places to send your work. An exceptional opportunity.

Pop-in and pop-out if you have booked one-on-one sessions.
Exercises, handouts & exploration to help sharpen your pen.

Event cost: $20 panel discussion + $20 for each 15-minute one-on-one session

Our Panelists

Scott Fraser, President and Publisher of Dundurn Press, spent eight years in the Canadian Armed Forces, and most people who have known him for a long time agree that he's better at books than boot camp. Dundurn Press is a leading independent, inclusive publisher offering Canadian books (fiction, non-fiction adult and children/YA) from every corner of the country.

Shane Joseph is the owner and publisher of Blue Denim Press. He is committed to publishing quality literary prose with a focus on novels, short stories and selective non-fiction, as well as services for self-publishing, POD or ePub. Shane is also the author of five novels, including the award-winning dystopian novel After the Flood, and three collections of short stories.

Frances Peck, a Certified Professional Editor (Hon.), a partner in West Coast Editorial Associates, has worked on all kinds of material, from websites and brochures to reports and books, and on all kinds of subjects. Her courses at the University of British Columbia and Douglas College, and her popular private workshops, deal with broad topics, such as plain language and the finer points of grammar and usage.

Heather M. O'Connor makes her living as a writer through her freelance work and children's books. Her YA novel for Orca Books, Betting Game, will be followed in 2020 with Too Fast Tyson, a picture book with Scholastic Books. Heather also writes short stories, fantasy and historical fiction. She's been awarded grants, scholarships and residencies, most recently Halls Island Artist Residency in Haliburton County.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

Please either display your printed ticket or a copy on your mobile device at the door when you arrive.

Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?

Yes! If someone else purchased the ticket for you, or gave you their ticket because of a last minute change of plans, we totally understand!

I'm purchasing ticket(s) for one-on-one session(s) - how do I find out my time(s)?

We will provide you your one-on-one times at the door when you arrive.

How do I get on a waiting list for one-on-one sessions that may be sold out?

Do I have to attend one-on-one sessions?

No! You can just attend the morning panel if you like. And don't forget, there is now a bonus workshop in the afternoon if you want to stick around!
