Negotiating Differences with Courage, Compassion and Whole Heartedness

COUPLES WORKSHOP

 

 “Understanding relationship triggers is one of the most important things a couple can do to negotiate differences and avoid conflict.” John Gottman

 

This workshop will cover the following areas:

  ~ What’s Right with You: The story of how you met and how this story still influences your relationship

  ~ Dealing with Difference: Communication patterns that reinforce difference and pull your relationship apart

  ~ Conflict Management Skills: Conflict modes and knowing your dominant mode so that you can handle conflict more effectively

 ~ Learning how to manage your triggers in your relationship: Disarming the threat response to create a more relaxed space for negotiating differences

  ~ Building Attunement skills: Turning towards the other to enhance deeper communication and foster more effective problem solving skills

  ~ Playing Fair: Asking for what you want while still attending to the relationship

  ~ Love languages: Knowing each other’s love language to foster deeper intimacy and shared understanding

FACILITATORS

LORRAINE HALL

Lorraine Hall has experience that encompasses health care systems in both Canada and the United States and her background comprises practice in two professions, as a registered nurse and as a registered social worker (MSW) in three settings, hospital, community and private practice. She has over 25 years of leadership and administrative experience as a Clinical Coordinator and Director of Social Work and over 30 years of clinical experience in inpatient psychiatry, outpatient mental health and private practice counselling. Lorraine has 3 1/2 years of Group Therapy training and supervision, 3 certificates in Conflict Resolution, completed 9 months of internship training in Family Systems Theory, Process Facilitation training, Mediation Skills Certificate, Nonviolent Communication workshops, Narrative Therapy, Clear Leadership training, 2 Landmark Education programs plus numerous other seminars, workshops and conferences. In addition, Lorraine co-facilitated Harassment Awareness Workshops for the Ministry of Health for 2 ½ years, taught Communication Skills for Supervisors, facilitated a Nonviolent Communication practice group and co-facilitated a Relationship Violence Treatment program for 4 years. Lorraine has worked in Mental Health for over 25 year, the last 10 being in an outpatient group therapy program. As well, she has maintained a part-time private practice for individuals, couples and families for many years using a variety of therapeutic skills mostly with EFAP contracts. Lorraine has a deep commitment to helping couples learn how to negotiate their differences on their journey from me to we, utilizing the crucial skills of courage, compassion and whole heartedness.

PIERRE IMLAY

Pierre Imlay has been employed as a counsellor for the past 25 years. He has worked in a broad range of settings ranging from child care and child protection casework to outpatient clinical treatment. He has worked in a variety of treatment modalities, including short-term individual therapy, couples therapy, and more recently group therapy. As well, his employment has covered both public service and private settings, specifically in the EFAP field. As a fellow with the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy, he received extensive training and supervision in couples and family therapy. This included a yearlong couples externship in couples therapy in Vancouver following completion of a Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology from Western University in 1992. Since then he has provided hundreds of counselling sessions to couples with a host of issues. He also completed training towards certification as a family mediator with Mediation Canada. This helped him in his role as a family mediator with the provincial Ministry of the Attorney General. In more recent years he has worked as a group therapist in a hospital outpatient program providing group therapy and developing expertise in helping group clients with relationship and mental health issues. In 2015, he wrote an article on mental illness in couple relationships which was published by the “heretohelp”, a publication by the Canadian Mental Health Association. Pierre is married and has a strong passion for helping couples on their journey towards improved communication, conflict resolution and stronger connection with each other.
