Event description

Description

From the Other Side is a 60 minute performance art work that utilizes: lighting effects, a diverse range of free improv musical styles, theoretical exposition recited by a narrator (an actor), film projection, live painting, odiferous enhancement, and a set designed with PVC plastic. The set creates a "wall”, separating spectators from performers, with the audience concealed from the performers looking toward a semi-opaque wall. This represents “the other side”.

Directed and conceived by Greg Hanec, FtOS features musicians Anna and Jason Hovland (Ponemah, National Monument, Dust Adam Dust) artist Alexis Flower (Lovesyck, Robojom), and a local actor. The artwork examines separation, mystery, concealment, reaching out, the problems humans have in communicating with each other without using veils or masks and general fears that come with not knowing what to expect from "the other side". After the performance, the audience will be invited to join the performers for a discussion and to view the “wall” up close. We have also invited Ali Can Cekirge a.k.a F.C Coconut to close the evening with an eclectic mixture of soul, world beats and hiphop jazz.

About the artist:

Greg Hanec is a Winnipeg-based multidisciplinary artist. His artworks utilize text, the visual arts (painting, installation, photography, film and sculpture), the movement of image and body, as well as free sound, composition, set design and curatorial facilitation to create substantial and reflective artistic epiphenomena. He began making films in 1980 with his short 3 Minutes Before 8 and completed his first feature in 1985, Downtime which screened at the 1986 Berlin Film Festival, followed by his second feature in 1988 Tunes A Plenty. From 1993 to 1997, Greg worked on various experimental film collaborations, and from 1997 to 2001 he worked with Campbell Martin to conduct a series of Guerrilla Projections. In 2005, Hanec formed Community of Continuity to house his numerous art projects, solo and in collaboration with others. These projects include: PHILIA: solo sound art + compositions, INTERMODAL FREIGHTSYSTEMS: random open member tape experiments, field////: arranged freeform in collaboration with Scott Ellenberger, Kerrigan Salniskovski and Thor Aitkenhead. Greg also started VIEWING METHOD GROUP with Thor Aitkenhad and Brian Longfield in 2014. VMG is a series of video experiments using triple exposure real-time video clips and live performances and conversions of source audio tracings into notation. The group performed live with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in 2015 at The New Music Festival for the Canadian premiere of Rouse’s Sym #4. He continues to work on these numerous projects in addition to curating local acts for space)doxa, a bi-monthly series of mixed act performances, and Zed Books Music Nights. Hanec is also working on three films: his third feature film Think At Night, The Locals, a documentary feature co-directed with Curtis Peters and Les Klaassen about nine Winnipeg musical acts, and Diagrams, an experimental narrative feature related to the SLOW CINEMA movement. Greg’s paintings have also been exhibited at various times at Graffiti Gallery (2005-2009) the Blankstein Gallery at the Millennium Library in 2011 and Tumble Contemporary Art Gallery in 2012.
