Welcome to Autism Ontario Fun Days!
Since 2008, Building Blocks Speech Pathology has had the pleasure of offering monthly Fun Days to members of Autism Ontario Hamilton Chapter. Each Fun Day gives children with Autism Spectrum Disorders the opportunity to participate in music, art, and activities, all while working on their speech, language, and social skills. The Fun Day programming is a parent driven initiative to use Autism Ontario funding to directly benefit the development of their children.
Thanks to the outstanding fundraising efforts of Wayne Griffiths and the Families with Autism Committee, including the annual Autism Ontario Charity Golf Tournament, these Fun Days are offered to Autism Ontario families without cost, allowing all members the opportunity to benefit from the programming.
How do Fun Days work?
Every Fun Day is made up of a morning and afternoon session, each including 8 children, maximizing the number of children who benefit from the programming each month. Every Fun Day focuses on a different theme, which is introduced during the fun and musical circle time! Following circle time, children rotate in small groups between art, activities and snack (all theme-related), before coming together for a final goodbye circle.
Children are asked to dress appropriately for the weather, and to bring a small snack to enjoy during snack time (no peanuts please). Parents do not need to stay at Building Blocks during Fun Days, as each child receives one-on-one attention from a staff member.
What will my child learn?
The focus of each Fun Day is to further develop both the understanding and use of language, as well as social skills - including group participation and turn taking.
How can my child get involved?
Once you're a member of Autism Ontario, contact Building Blocks Speech Pathology (905-525-2484) to arrange an initial meeting. During this initial meeting, a registered Speech-Language Pathologist will meet with you and your child to jointly determine appropriate goals to target during Fun Days. This initial meeting will also help familiarize your child with the Building Blocks environment and its staff members! (if you have attended fun days before no initial meeting is required)
Following the initial meeting, you will be able to register your child through AUTISM ONTARIO and then Building Blocks will contact you once availability from all potential participants is received, groups are structured based on availability as well as child goals. Due to the overwhelming popularity of the Fun Days programming, there are a far greater number of children registered to participate than there are spots available each month. For this reason, not every child will be able to participate in every Fun Day, but when your child is scheduled to attend, he/she will be matched up with the staff members and peers best suited to meet his/her needs.
We look forward to seeing you soon!
PLEASE NOTE: First spots for the Fun Days will be given to CURRENT AUTISM ONTARIO MEMBERS and only for children with ASD who have done the initial interview with Building Blocks.
If there are any open spots after that, non-members will be contacted. Fun days are FREE to Autism Ontario Members, Non-members must pay a $20 fee (for a subsidized spot in the fun day - $200 value) Fee can be paid by cash, check or credit card prior to your child attending the day. Please contact our office to arrange payment
