AFC’s Functional Food & Bioactives Network will continue holding monthly networking sessions this month and we want you to attend! This month's FFBNetwork meetup will be held on Wednesday October 26 at Devaney's pub from 6 to 8pm. The first event was a lot of fun and attendees represented a broad cross section of our FFBN community including companies, provincial and federal government's, researchers, funding agencies, service providers, students, and members of the general public and we were pleased to see the conversations continuing well past the end time. Angela and Branko will share their observations from the Supply Side West ingredient show and invite anybody who would like to make a presentation to contact them directly. Come join the fun, enjoy some good food and drink, and make new contacts. We hope that those of you who are occupied on Tuesday nights can join this month's Wednesday meeting.
These are informal meetings held after work hours that provide an opportunity to get together and network with fellow participants in the community who are active in the functional foods, natural products, value added processing, ingredients, and bioactives. This is a growing community in Alberta with many different groups involved and we hope by giving people an opportunity to get together regularly it will facilitate relationship building, collaboration, knowledge transfer, and all the other benefits that can be expected with a cohesive industry cluster.
Who Should Attend:
Students and Post Docs at all levels- it’s a great opportunity to introduce your passion, your research, or perhaps meet a potential employer.
Researchers- let everyone know what you are working on and what you will need, and if you can’t make it, send your students and post docs.
Government and Related Organizations (Funding and Non Funding)- let everyone know about the full range of services you offer (not just funding). Learn about companies and projects who are a good match and introduce new programs being launched.
Companies- you may be looking to add staff, find a resource you need, look for new product pipeline opportunities, need money, use your waste, and present your company.
Investors- find new investment opportunities and learn about market trends that are popular.
Technical Service Providers- introduce your capabilities and services.
Producers- learn about new opportunities for crop, animal, dairy, or egg assets.
General Public- everyone is interested in better food, health and new local products on the horizon. As an industry we should embrace the opportunity to help educate the public about what we do. So please feel free to invite anyone not active in the sector but who is interested.
What is the Purpose:
We all know our passions and technologies take time, money, patience, many resources and partners, to become commercial products and opportunities. The chances of success are going to be greatly increased if we can exchange information regularly with people who may be able to make a contribution to our projects and technologies. New information can help guide or focus your project for the best market opportunity.
With our abundant natural resources and feedstocks, strong educational facilities, government investment in technical and research facilities, and a need to diversify our economy, let’s do our part to become a major sector leading the diversification.
The event is casual and meant to encourage networking. Devaney’s offers a nice variety of excellent food and drink which is available for purchase. You can run an individual tab and pay when you leave.
It is after work so we can all pay undivided attention to our work and companies during the day.
Audio visual is available to allow participants to present their project, company, organization, etc. After each meeting, we would accept requests from people who would like to present the following month and schedule one or two fifteen minute presentations. We will focus on networking at the first meeting and resume with presentations thereafter.
Depending on feedback and demand, the format can change to meet the needs of participants. We are flexible, and want to make this is your event. It should be enjoyable, informative, and helpful.
Based on lessons learned from the first meetings in Edmonton, we will look to expand to Calgary and Lethbridge in 2017.
This is a social networking event and we hope it facilitates the development of a cohesive industry cluster, so that together we can establish an increased presence in Alberta.
This event in intended to be complementary to other activities, programs, and conferences that are held in Alberta on a regular basis. We will continue to attend and support these events and encourage everybody to continue to support these events.
Please register to attend and participate to make this initiative is a success!
