Event description

Description

Mayworks is proud to partner with The Public, a activist design studio and gallery that focuses on anti-oppression, sustainability, and capacity building through meaningful participation and designing processes for community self-determination. The Public uses popular education and participatory design to re-distribute and re-imagine power, and has facilitated workshops on a number of topics, including textile design, anti-oppression, consent, and zine-making. The Public has a “do it yourself” spirit and brings together these efforts as much as possible to engage in sustained social change.

In this three hour workshop, participants will be introduced to the practice of conditional design; an adaptive, game-based process of analogue visualization that uses input, logic and creativity to respond to environmental changes. Through discussions and small group activities, we will propose idealized and speculative conditions, resulting in new visualizations that imagine a more just and equitable future for working peoples.

Conditional design is a concept for artists and designers that focuses on processes rather than products. The Conditional Design Manifesto focuses on the approach to design rather than the media we choose to use for our outputs and creations. The workshop will be led by Sheila Sampath,
Principal and Creative Director of The Public, Editorial and Art Director of Shameless Magazine, Canada’s feminist voice for young women and trans youth, and an Assistant Professor of alternative and speculative practices at OCAD University. Sheila is an important part of Toronto’s arts community, providing spaces for unique and engaging works.
