About this Event

The 'Learn Your Landscape' Series brings local scientists and experts to present important aspects of the natural systems and beings that inhabit this beautiful place that we reside within. Each month, Experience Journeys hosts an evening at The Heart of Bragg Creek that comprises presentation and discussion.

Like all ecosystems, forests are beautiful and diverse More than any ecosystem, forests store terrestrial carbon and are key contributors to nature-based solutions to climate change. In this talk, Mary Reid will focus on Alberta's lodgepole pine forests and their carbon stocks in relation to stand age and bark beetles, with a look to the future.

Mary Reid is a professor in Biological Sciences and the Environmental Science Program at the University of Calgary and a long-time resident of West Bragg Creek. She has been studying bark beetle reproduction and habitat selection, and more recently their host trees, in western Canada for more than 30 years. She values nature being nature without humans, and so has been concerned about global climate change over these same decades.
