Event description

Description

THIS EXPERIENCE INVOLVES AN INFO SESSION ON THE PLASTICS OF LAKE ERIE, PARTICIPATION IN A COMMUNITY PROJECT AND A MOSAIC ACTIVITY THAT CAN BE COMPLETED ON SITE AND TAKEN HOME FOR THE GARDEN.

Join us in creating an 8' 2-D mosaic sturgeon from recycled glass tiles and post-consumer waste salvaged from the Lake Erie shoreline.

Participants will be invited to create fishscales from plastics gathered by the public during our clean-up days led by partner @CleaningUpNorfolk, as a tangible representation of their commitment to a reduction in single-use plastics.

***Please register for ONE of the offered workshop times, as space is limited to 25 people per workshop.***

The final work will be revealed and exhibited in fall of 2019 at the Port Dover Harbour Museum.

These individual scales will be incorporated into a the larger fish design, which has an outline of Lake Erie delineated in plastic, within its shape, much the same as real life.

A scale is an interconnected, integral part of the fish’s sensory and protective system.

An individual is an interconnected, integral part of a community’s sensory and protective system.

The scales, combined, are a metaphor for a strong, functional community. The symbolic creation by the community of the system of scales represents a sense of fluid interconnection, protection for our future, and the ‘linking of arms’ that can enable change.

The once plentiful sturgeon is our pre-historic looking, long-lived giant that has been all but eradicated from our Lake Erie and waterways as a consequence of our choices, from farming run-off to the irresponsible disposal of plastics. Learn more during our informal info session at the start of every workshop.

We believe that each individual has a responsibility and the ability to enact change through small, personal acts and choices. Those individual acts, accumulated, have widespread impact. Providing information and metaphorical representation, we hope to engage not just the minds, but the hearts of the community in the protection of our waterways, through smarter consumption and sustainable development and tourism.

Participants of the August 17th workshop will also create a take-home mosaic of a sturgeon.
