Event description
Great garden soil is essential for growing great food! Soil affects everything from germination through to the taste of what we harvest.

About this Event

Growing Great Garden Soil at Acadia Community Garden & Arts Society

Great garden soil is essential for growing great food! Soil affects everything from germination through to the taste of what we harvest, yet it is often given scant attention season over season. Its time to look at our garden soil with new eyes and knowledge and get passionate about it, just as much as the seeds we sow!

Topics to be covered:

  • what is soil?; physical, chemical, biological properties;
  • soil food web- what it is and the critters that we need;
  • our native soil;
  • what annual vegetable gardens need for soil;
  • what perennial gardens require in their soil;
  • soil amendments and fertilizers;
  • growing medium for containers;
  • cultural methods to improve soil- no till, mulching, weeding, cover cropping,
  • composting; when to do what to your soil.

Hands on will include: soil testing- jar test, hand texturing, chemical tests, water infiltration; making your own growing medium; amending a communal bed’s soil; amending and mulching a perennial bed

Open to any interested gardener, new and old!

Garden On! is sponsored by greengate Garden Centre. All participants will be entered in draw to win 1 of 4 $25 Greengate gift cards!

Funds raised will help support the Host Community Gardens!

IMPORTANT: if the pandemic health rules prevents us from meeting in person this workshop will go online!

JUST AS IMPORTANT: if the weather is foul (blizzard, -20C, pelting rain) we will look to reschedule to another date close by as we really want to be in the garden!
