Garden Speaker Series
Chinese Houses in Southeast Asia: The Eclectic Architecture of Sojourners and Settlers, with Dr. Ronald G. Knapp

Expert of the cultural and historical geography of China, Dr. Ronald G. Knapp will talk about the eclectic Chinese houses he visited during his research for the book Chinese Houses in Southeast Asia: The Eclectic Architecture of Sojourners and Settlers.

Chinese migrants in Southeast Asia make up a large part of the world’s cultural diasporas. Dr. Knapp and photographer A. Chester Ong went on several lengthy field excursions in search of century-old homes built by successful Chinese sojourners and settlers in Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Indonesia. Nearly forty well-preserved and stunningly beautiful homes that combine Chinese, European, and local influences are featured in Dr. Knapp’s book. The tales of the immigrants’ achievements are told through the fascinating account of architectural multiculturalism.

Dr. Knapp will be signing copies of the following titles, and they will be available for purchase at the Garden:

Chinese Bridges: Living Architecture from China's Past
Chinese Houses in Southeast Asia: The Eclectic Architecture of Sojourners and Settlers
Things Chinese: Antiques, Crafts, Collectibles
