Description

This 3-hour introductory medical education session is for health care providers interested in learning more about gender affirming medical care for gender diverse and transgender patients. The goal of this session is to better equip providers currently in practice to support their transgender patients as well as prepare them to take on new patients.

The University of British Columbia Division of Continuing Professional Development (UBC CPD) is fully accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Continuing Medical Education (CACME) to provide study credits for continuing medical education for physicians. This program meets the certification criteria of the College of Family Physicians of Canada and has been certified by UBC CPD for up to 3.0 Mainpro+ Group Learning credits. Each physician should claim only those credits accrued through participation in the activity.

This program was co‐developed by VCH Department of Family and Community Practice and Transcare BC and was planned to achieve scientific integrity, objectivity and balance.

There is a pre-requisite for this course. Please take the 40 minute online course: Exploring Gender Diversity, developed by Trans Care BC. This course is free to access via their website here: http://www.phsa.ca/transcarebc/health-professionals/education/trans-intro

This course will also be videoconferenced. If you wish to attend this course remotely then please choose the Videoconference ticket type and instructions to connect will be emailed out prior to the event.

Course Outline:

(1) Introduction and Background

  • Background on suicide
  • Minority Stress
  • Effect of Transition on Wellbeing
  • Creating a safe encounter

(2) Hormone Therapy.

  • Review of relevant Standards of Care/Practice Guidelines
  • Basics of the Hormone Readiness Assessment.
  • Review of medications used, effects, and risks.
  • Ongoing monitoring of hormone therapy and treatment of side effects.

(3) Documentation/Surgeries

  • Review of X gender designation
  • Review of MSP insured surgical options and how to access them in BC.
    1. Chest Surgery
    2. Breast Augmentation
    3. Vaginoplasty
    4. Metoidoplasty
    5. Phalloplasty.

(4) Primary Care/Preventative Health

  • Effects of hormones on Cardiovascular Risk
  • Osteoporosis
  • Cancer Screening
  • Sexual Health
  • Genital care post surgery/transition
  • Resources
