Event description
How sourcing, burning and working Kingston’s own quicklime informs the proper conservation of vernacular architecture.

About this Event

This talk, part of the City of Kingston's Heritage Resource Centre Lecture Series, will offer first impressions of a working mason on the suitability of like-for-like hot-mixed quicklime based mortars in restoring local vernacular stone structure.

Patrick Jenkins will discuss the learning process of burning local limestone into quicklime and the importance of petrographic analysis of mortar. This will include case studies of like-for-like repairs comparing locally produced vs. imported quicklime, aggregates and pozzolans.
