Event description

Description

Freedom is a foundational Canadian principle, which George Jonas (1935-2016) promoted throughout his life, both before and after coming to Canada from communist Hungary. A renowned Canadian author, poet and columnist, George Jonas made freedom a consistent and important theme in all of his writings. The annual George Jonas Freedom Award recognizes and honours one individual each year who has contributed significantly to advancing and preserving freedom in Canada.

The George Jonas Freedom Award will be presented to Christie Blatchford on Friday June 14, 2019 at the Eglinton Grand in Toronto. This wonderful evening includes a reception, dinner, the award presentation, and a keynote speech from Ms. Blatchford.

Christie Blatchford is a well-known Canadian journalist, columnist, and author. Ms. Blatchford’s candid but uncompromising writings have earned her a well-deserved reputation as a courageous, fair and objective reporter. Ms. Blatchford has become known for speaking truth to power, and is sensitive to the core Canadian principles of individual liberty and the rule of law. Risking injury to career and reputation, and refusing to be intimidated, she has faced cultural forces and bureaucratic tendencies with steadfast conviction that the light of truth must always prevail.

We are pleased to announce that Marie Henein will introduce Christie Blatchford at the George Jonas Freedom Award Dinner! Ms. Henein is a senior partner at Henein Hutchison LLP, one of the country’s Top Ten Litigation Boutiques. She has been counsel on numerous high-profile cases. Her experience includes a wide range of criminal, regulatory, quasi-criminal and cross border litigation representing individual, corporate and institutional clients at the trial and appellate level. Ms. Henein has frequently argued at all levels of court including the Ontario Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada.

Ms. Henein received her LL.B. in 1989 from Osgoode Hall Law School and her Masters in Law from Columbia University in 1991. Ms. Henein is the Past President of The Advocates' Society, a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and a member of the Supreme Court Advocacy Institute. She is a founder of the Ontario Court of Appeal's Appellate Pro Bono Program, a program that provides free appellate services to unrepresented individuals at the Court of Appeal. Ms. Henein has lectured extensively throughout the country and is the editor of numerous publications.

Ms. Henein has been repeatedly recognized as one of the Top 25 Most Influential Lawyers by Canadian Lawyer Magazine, and was the 2013 recipient of the Law Society of Upper Canada’s Laura Legge Award. Most recently in 2017, she was awarded The Law Society Medal.

The second annual George Jonas Freedom Award Dinner returns to the Eglinton Grand, 400 Eglinton Avenue West, Toronto. A reception commences at 5:30 p.m., with the dinner and award ceremony beginning at 6:30 p.m.
