Description

Despite more and more champions for girls in sport like Hayley, millions of girls around the world are kept “out of the game” - sport, education, a fulfilling career - because they don’t have access to good health and nutrition.

Nominate two players from your team to join our interactive leadership workshop: "Get More Girls in the Game". The workshop will help players take action to empower other girls, while also developing their own leadership skills. The objective of this workshop is to help girls recognize their influence and how to use it intentionally. They will feel inspired by the personal experiences of the speakers and will be asked to question the true meaning of the word leadership.

Who can attend?

Each coach is asked to select two girls from their team in advance of the tournament to participate in this workshop. Representatives will have to exhibit the characteristics of community leadership and the ability to inspire and motivate others. There will be a total of 100-120 participants.

What will the workshop consist of?

The workshop will begin with a discussion led by 3 female panelists (speaker bios below). The discussion will be facilitated by long-time advocate for the health and empowerment of girls, and creator of the WickFest tournament, Hayley Wickenheiser. Following the panel, participants will break into groups to discuss topics further with the help of an experienced facilitator. Groups will then report back to the larger group and share their learnings.

We invite you to add your teams voice to the growing movement for girls empowerment by identifying two girls from your team to participate in this unique experience. The deadline to RSVP your team's participants is November 19th, 2018.

SPEAKER BIOS

Anayat Sidhu

Anayat Sidhu is a born and raised Albertan. She is a community leader, passionate volunteer, women’s empowerment advocate, and engaged citizen. While working towards her undergraduate degree, she has been chosen to represent Canada as part of the SUN CSN Youth Leaders for Nutrition Program. Nutrition and global health are important to her as seeing the people behind the statistics are crucial to addressing the gaps in global poverty and curbing deaths of millions. Her experiences living in India as a young child lacking micronutrients in her diet reminded her of the importance that something as simple as the food you eat has on your life. This resonated with her because she saw the impact that malnutrition broadly had on the lives of her peers and citizens in India. Therefore, she focused on improving nutrition for adolescent girls, as well as child and maternal health since then.

Nicola Paviglianiti

Growing up an active young girl in Calgary, Nicola experienced the importance health, nutritious food, and a positive environment had in cultivating success. She recognized not everyone was as fortunate as her, and became passionate towards ensuring everyone had the resources and opportunities to pursue and achieve their dreams too. In 2015, Nicola fell in love with lifting weights and discovered the true power of sport as an avenue to create change and empower others. Leading by example in a traditionally male-dominated sport and continuing to powerlift along the way, Nicola pursued her Masters’ Degree in International Humanitarian Aid, where she conducted her thesis research in Zimbabwe studying how grassroots strength training activities could be used to address humanitarian needs. What is your inner strength? Nicola believes that within each one of lies the power to be leaders and catalysts for change both locally and globally.

Dilpreet K Samra

Dilpreet K. Samra is currently a student at the University of Calgary pursuing a combination of Arts/Business degree. Sports have always played an important role in her life. Although presently she is not involved in any leagues, in the past she played basketball, soccer, wrestling, and rugby. Growing up, it was evident to Dilpreet that not all girls had access to the same opportunities. She understood that she had privileges that not all the girls had access to - in her community and in the world. This led her to volunteer work in the area of healthy lifestyle education. Presently, she holds the role of Meal Preparation Coordinator for a local non-profit organization in Calgary. As part of her role, she helps provide free nutritious lunches in elementary schools in underprivileged communities and facilitates conversations about healthy eating and proper nutrition.
