Description

What's It All About?

The textile industry has become one of the world’s most dangerous, polluting industries, destroying valuable farmland, water sources, and species that rely on these resources. In order to put a halt on these destructive cycles, it is essential that we, as inhabitants of the earth, learn how our consumption of textiles affects the earth. Even more important is for us to acquire the skills necessary to preserve our existing garments.

As we’re pulling our fall and winter garments out to prepare for colder weather, we’re bound to find holes from last year’s wear…or from munching moths. This workshop welcomes all to come to The Gladstone to learn how to repair their knit garments (sweaters, mittens, hats, socks). Attendees will get an introduction to mending techniques in order to confidently repair holes in their own clothing and other fabric objects. They will also gain an understanding of how their textile consumption and use can impact the planet. We will cover some key hand stitches and approaches to darning holes in knit fabrics. Through meditative and mindful stitches, menders can connect with their clothing in personalized ways, and bring home garments that are unique to their own expressions of care.
