Getting the Antimicrobial Message:
Results from Canadian Public Opinion Research on Antibiotic Use and Antimicrobial Resistance

July 26, 2022, 11:30 am – 12:30 pm Central Time [12:30-1:30 pm Eastern]Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is among the top ten public health challenges facing the world today. Public awareness is a key element in coordinated action necessary to the control of AMR. However, there has been limited insight into what the Canadian public knows and how people’s knowledge may shape health behaviours, including antibiotic use. Synopsis:The Public Health Agency of Canada funded public opinion research to assess the Canadian public’s knowledge, attitudes and behaviours related to antimicrobial resistance and antibiotic use. The researchers conducted focus groups and a nationwide telephone survey. This presentation examines the research findings in three areas: knowledge, perception and use of antibiotics; antibiotic use and health practices; and knowledge, awareness and perception of AMR. Considerations for AMR awareness campaigns and stewardship will be discussed. The presentation will be followed by a Q&amp;A session, when participants can discuss implications of the findings for their roles in public health and other sectors.Learning Objectives:Event participants will gain: <ol><li>Understanding of three theme areas with respect to the Canadian public: a) knowledge, perception and use of antibiotics; b) antibiotic use and health practices; and c) knowledge, awareness and perception of AMR;</li><li>Insight into socio-demographic differences within the Canadian population with respect to the three theme areas, as well as factors that may influence differences in practices and perceptions;</li><li>Greater clarity on priorities and opportunities to advance awareness of AMR and appropriate antibiotic use.</li></ol>This webinar will be delivered in English with simultaneous interpretation available in French. The presentation will be followed by a Q&amp;A session where questions can be asked in French or English. Speakers:Anna-Louise Crago - Anna-Louise Crago is a Senior Epidemiologist within the Surveillance, Integration and Transformation Division of the Antimicrobial Resistance Task Force. She holds a PhD in medical anthropology from the University of Toronto specializing in social and structural determinants of health.

Tanya Lary - Tanya Lary is the Director of Surveillance Integration and Transformation at the AMR Taskforce of the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC). Prior to joining the Taskforce, she worked on HIV/AIDS policy, family violence policy and children’s rights at PHAC and at Women and Gender Equality, and on the surveillance of mental health, suicide, and family violence. She has worked internationally for UNICEF and UNDP in Central Asia, Pakistan and China.
