Event description

Description

You have finished your first written draft. Now it's time to begin the process of revision and editing. You may have already made a couple of attempts at revision, but in your heart, you know it's still not ready. You have shown it to some friends and family who are polite but guarded. You know it needs more work. It doesn’t matter if it is your memoir, your novel, or your short story. You're stumped.

You're not alone. Even the great Ernest Hemingway faced revision challenges. He revealed this in an interview with the Paris Review.

  • Interviewer: How much rewriting do you do?

  • Hemingway: It depends. I rewrote the ending to A Farewell to Arms thirty-nine times.

  • Interviewer: Was there a technical problem? What was it that stumped you?

  • Hemingway: Getting the words right.

Self-editing is a process. It is not magic. Editing is a learned process.

Let Marva K. Blackmore show you how to systematically tackle the revision and editing of your written work and help you to “get your words right.” She has been an editor since the 1980s and has been teaching others since the 1990s. She has also spent the last few years helping people in the Oceanside area write and edit their memoirs, and she now brings that experience to this workshop. Marva is a storyteller, memoir writer, editor, creative writing mentor and instructor.

Join her for four Monday afternoons (September 10, 17, 24, and October 1) from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. where she will take you through the editing process which includes the following:

  • How to “inventory” your work before you revise

  • Learn strategies for different stages of revision

  • Explore ways to sharpen and tighten your work

  • Identify what may be missing from your manuscript

  • Decide what should be excluded from you work.

  • Learn traditional copyediting procedures

  • Explore techniques for proper proofreading

Over the four-week workshop, you will work through a series of practical exercises in class and at home. You will also be able to apply what you learn each week to your current work-in-progress.

OR call Marva at 250-594-3221 to reserve your spot in this informative and practical workshop. These workshops fill rapidly, so it is best to register early.

As Mark Twain says, “The secret of getting ahead is getting started.” Let’s move ahead together.
