Description

This year's International Women’s Day (IWD) theme was #PressforProgress, with a specific focus on women in sport.

Working with this year's theme, our organization is hosting a free, interactive half-day workshop for 12-18 year-old female athletes with caregivers and coaches encouraged to participate as well. Workshop activities will be tailored to each as break-out groups will be a component of the day. Group discussion will be led by facilitators giving all participants a chance to identify issues they see hindering the progress of girls in sport.

Workshop Agenda:

10:00-10:20: Participant Registration Check-In

10:20-10:30: Welcome and Opening Remarks

Linda Ross, President/CEO, Provincial Advisory Council on the Status of Women NL

10:30-11:30: BodySense: Creating Body Positive Spaces for Girls in Sport (*Supported by: The Eating Disorder Foundation Newfoundland and Labrador)

Holly Foley, Registered Dietitian with a Sports Nutrition Diploma from the International Olympic Committee

11:30-12:00: Yoga

Eleanor Power, Yoga Teacher and Manuals River Lead Science Interpreter

12:00-12:45: Lunch

12:45-1:45: Panel Session

Topics: Discrimination in sport based on gender, how females athletes are represented in the media (and online), and equality for females in sport.

Guided by: Dr. Anne-Marie Sullivan Associate Dean, Graduate Studies and Research, School of Human Kinetics & Recreation, MUN with panelists:

Sara Diamond, Registered Massage Therapist, CanFit Pro certified, multi-sport athlete (hockey, volleyball, and softball), hockey coach at all-star, provincial and Canada Games level

Amanda Hancock, PhD student at Memorial University’s Faculty of Business, champion rower, gender equity in sport advocate, board member of Fertile Future and Special Olympics NL

Meghan McCabe, Journalist at CBC, lifelong dancer and teacher, yogi, and competitive rower in the annual Royal St. John's Regatta

Jen White, Reporter and Producer with CBC News, horseback rider, Tely 10 runner, and involved with a recreational dodgeball league
