Description

Grow Op at the Gladstone Hotel celebrates its seventh year with an exhibition of art, design and ideas across a range of disciplines.

The 2019 edition considers ENERGY; Clean energy, dirty energy, social energy, positive energy, negative energy, climate energy, embodied energy, resilient energy. Do we hoard, waste, commodify, burn it, or do we store, reuse, renew it? How humans and other species live within and without natural systems of growth, change, abundance, scarcity, decay and life.

Curated by Christine Leu and Alan Webb of LeuWebb Projects, with Lee Petrie, Exhibitions Director, Gladstone Hotel.

EVENTS

April 17
Harvest Wednesdays Launch: Local Producer Cocktail Party | 6-8pm | $50 (includes Grow Op admission ticket)

Celebrate real food with a cocktail party to kick off Ontario’s growing season. Meet the farmers and producers behind King Cole Ducks, VG Meats, Fogo Island Fisheries, Chick-A-Biddy Acres CSA and Grange Winery.

It’s never been more important to rethink our relationship with food and the people who produce it! Our bodies and environment are paying the price for the mass production of meat, produce and grains. Join us at Harvest Wednesdays every month to explore the tastes and stories behind real food through a series of experiential dinners that connect you directly to some of our favourite local producers. Can’t make it to a Harvest Wednesday dinner? Don’t sweat it! Our ingredient-forward cafe menus feature local and ethical producers every night of the week!

As part of Grow Op, the Gladstone is pleased to present our second annual Grow Op International Artist Residency. The residencies begin at Artscape Gibraltar Point on Toronto Island and then continue at the Gladstone during the exhibition. The residencies are designed to provide artists with the opportunity to engage with our city, connect with other artists, and deepen the conversation around crucial issues. This year’s residency features two artists. We welcome Maria Thereza Alves (Berlin, Germany and Naples, Italy) and Mary Kavanagh (Lethbridge, Alberta). The artists discuss their practices, and what they learned and created during their residencies. We invite you to relax, grab a drink and learn more from these artists.
