Description

Professor and award-winning author, Kamal al-Solaylee, will talk about his most recent book, "Brown: What Being Brown in the World Today Means (to Everyone)". Al-Solaylee will share his research and stories of how migration, labour, and being brown is a racialized experience around the globe today. Touching upon issues of identity, globalization, migration, and global inequality, this lecture will take audiences on an underexplored part of modern life. The global connectors of being brown is narrated in this lecture in an eye-opening research and analysis of contemporary issues of our time. Book sales and signing of this finalist for the 2016 Governor General Award Literary Awards for Non-Fiction will take place after the lecture.

Kamal Al-Solaylee, Author and Professor of Journalism, Ryerson University

Dr. Kamal Al-Solaylee, an associate professor at the School of Journalism at Ryerson University, was previously a theatre critic at the Globe and Mail. He has written features and reviews for the Toronto Star, National Post, The Walrus, Toronto Life, Chatelaine, Quill & Quire, Canadian Notes & Queries, Literary Review of Canada and ELLE Canada. His bestselling memoir Intolerable: A Memoir of Extremes won the Toronto Book Award and was a finalist for the Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize for Nonfiction, the Lambda Literary Award, and Canada Reads. Al-Solaylee holds a PhD in English from the University of Nottingham. His new book, Brown, has been hailed as "brilliant" by The Walrus magazine, "essential reading" by the Globe and Mail, and was a finalist for the 2016 Governor General's Award for Non-Fiction He holds a PhD in English Literature from Nottingham University.
