gov.Futures is a one-day speculative design workshop dedicated to creating and enabling future visions of challenges facing policymakers & citizens.

What_

Speculative design is a process that uses design to interrogate possible futures and the impacts it might have.
Together in this
event we will produce, ‘future artifacts’ and narratives (often called design fictions). These narratives are powerful tools which can better understand ethical, political and social ramifications, facilitating critical discourse, and directing change.

Who_
40 participants in 8 teams composed of:
designers, technologists, policy makers, government workers & citizens. All those who care about the impacts of government in the future.

Why _
Fast societal and technological transformations are changing both the way governments shape policies and how citizens interact with public services. Speculative design can give policymakers a tool to understand how these changes may affect us in the future and what we can do about it today.

Theme_

What is the future of labour & work?

Automation and technology are defining new professional roles and a total shift towards service-based economies. The concept of work and labour are unsettling and policies will require a responsive adaptation to these changes. In this workshop we will discuss the narrative of robots as agent for disruption of the current workforce and how they will influence the capacity to co-work and develop new workplaces that enable this capacity.

The aim of this first .Futures workshop is to explore the possibilities around robotic and digital entities augmenting our work types possibilities, exploring narratives and counter narratives to the idea that the future will be job-scarce due to the introduction of automated technologies and exploring possible challenges and opportunities

Challenge_

How might future policies, programs and organisations look like in the face of the social and cultural shift time from current labour models to ones based on digital automation.

Agenda _
The workshop will go through a speculative design process of: examine, explore & extract.

  • Introduction to Speculative Design _ Examples of its application

  • Trend Analysis and Exploration _ Overview of current trends in the exploration spaceFuture Artifact Prototyping _ Design of
an artifact of the future to interrogate.

  • Design Fiction
_ Creation of future scenarios that simulate a possible future reality
