M﻿ike Roberts, PhD History Candidate, York University THURSDAY, 21 SEPTEMBER, 4:00-5:30PM ESTIn 1878, John Henry “The Blaster” Tallman bought Fireproof Champion Steam Engine #48. With his wife, nurse and diarist Beulah Tallman, he established a diversified farm near Beamsville, Ontario. From that base, he used the horse-drawn engine to power their agrarian community. In 1891, he added a second, larger engine. In 1902, with their children coming of age, the couple retired from farming and John, now an expert engineer, aided and taught younger engineers for another decade. The story of this one fascinating family reveals the deep expertise required to be a rural engineer and shows what “threshing engines” -- and engineers -- were doing the other nine months of the year; small steam engines categorically changed the conditions of possibility for family farms in North America and allowed some communities to maintain a gracious subsistence despite pressure to commercialize.
