Event description
A greenhouse or other micro-climate structure like a cloche, hoop house, or cold frame, does not need to be expensive or time consuming.

About this Event

What should one consider when planning to build a small hobby greenhouse? What materials could be used to build it? Does it need heating and cooling? Where should it be sited in your yard?

There are many considerations, and a little bit of planning goes a long way.

A greenhouse or other microclimate creation structure like a cloche, hoop house, or cold frame, does not need to be expensive or time consuming; it can be small and simple with a minimum investment in materials and equipment or it can be a fully equipped, fancy, automated conservatory. The final choice of the type of greenhouse will depend on the available site, and the growing space that is desired, what you wish to grow and the environment required for those plants, as well as your budget. In this workshop we will explore the functions of different greenhouses, location and planning, a variety of simple DIY greenhouses and how to grow plants inside these modified climates.

The Compost Education Centre is located on unceded and occupied Indigenous territories, specifically the land of the Lekwungen speaking people—the Esquimalt and Songhees Nations. These nations are two of many, made up of individuals who have lived within the porous boundaries of what is considered Coast Salish, Nuu-Chah-Nulth and Kwakwa'wakw Territory (Vancouver Island) since time immemorial. At the CEC we seek to respect, honour and continually grow our own understandings of Indigenous rights and history, and to fulfill our responsibilities as settlers, who live and work directly with the land and its complex, vital ecologies and our diverse, evolving communities.

Compost Education Centre memberships get you free workshops, discounts at garden centres around town and more great perks! Sign up or learn more on our website.
