Getting Grounded: How Landscape & Design Shape Urban Culture

Can landscape architecture be a driving force in the creation of sustainable cities? How can design not only enhance the lived experiences of citizens and communities, but also improve urban infrastructure and functionality? What kinds of meaningful relationships can city dwellers cultivate with the natural world to boost our psychological, aesthetic, economic, and environmental well-being?

Join Michaela MacLeod (Polymétis), Paula Meijerink (WANTED landscape), Ran Goel (Fresh City Farms), and Jay Wall (STUDIO JAYWALL) in conversation with After School moderator Nicola Spunt on the subject of how landscape and design influence urban culture. The interdisciplinary panel will explore how intelligently designed outdoor spaces contribute to the vitality of our cities and community engagement with natural systems can enrich our lives and diminish our untenable demands on water, air, and soil.

Admission:

Door Tickets: $25 ($15 with a Grow Op ticket stub from that day)

Gladstone Hotel

Built in 1889, the Gladstone Hotel  is Toronto’s oldest continually operating hotel and has been evolving as a local cultural hub since 2003 with a vision to revolutionize a hospitality model that operates at the intersection of arts, sustainability and social change.  From karaoke to weddings, book launches to burlesque, the hotel is a meeting place for local creatives and travellers, making it possible to explore and interact with the living culture of artist life in Toronto. In 2005 we invited local artists to transform our recently restored 19th century hotel rooms into 37 unique artist designed hotel rooms. Our robust art story continues still in our gallery spaces on all four floors with thought-provoking art exhibitions 365 days per year.  The Gladstone Hotel is an inviting, inclusive hospitality beacon that allows artists, neighbours, travellers and revellers to connect, collaborate, celebrate, dine, explore, participate and sing their hearts out!
