Event Information
Description
Join Stephan Klasen and Janneke Pieters as they introduce their research project supported under the Growth and Economic Opportunities for Women (GrOW) Program, a multi-funder initiative between the UK Government’s Department for International Development, The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and Canada’s International Development Research Centre.
This project seeks to expand our understanding of the relationship between women’s economic empowerment and economic growth. It will conduct a review of evidence, the first ever, of how women’s economic empowerment interventions can contribute to economic growth. The project will unpack the complex ways in which growth and structural change can have different impacts on women’s employment and economic outcomes, with an aim to influence policies that can benefit women across the globe. Research is underway in 14 countries: Bangladesh, Bolivia, Brazil, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, South Africa, Uganda, and Vietnam.
Research institutions: Georg-August-University Göttingen; Delhi School of Economics; Stellenbosch University; University of Cape Town; Wageningen University.
Presenters:
Janneke Pieters is an Assistant Professor at the Development Economics Group in Wageningen University, and a Research Fellow at the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA).
Stephan Klasen is a Professor of Development Economics at the University of Göttingen. He is also the director of the Ibero-America Institute for Economic Research and the Coordinator of the Courant Research Center 'Poverty, equity, and growth in developing and transition countries.
