Event description

Description

Want to grow your own groceries but not sure where to start? This is a crash course in veggie growing designed for total beginners who want to start growing their own fresh produce. We will touch on site selection, timing, starting seeds, diseases and pests and more!

Instructor Bio:

As Site Manager, Alysha Punnett practices organic gardening and permaculture in the Compost Education Centre’s gardens. Originally from the arid mountains of the Okanagan, a passion for implementing sustainable living strategies led her to the Island to complete a BSc. in Environmental Management, a Permaculture Design Certificate (Seven Ravens Permaculture Academy) and an Organic Master Gardener Certificate (Gaia College). This practical education inspired her to get her hands dirty and learn how to rehabilitate soil to grow her own food and become more self-reliant. She enjoys passing on her experience and knowledge by teaching workshops at the Centre as well as out in the community.

The Compost Education Centre is located on unceded and occupied Indigenous territories, specifically the land of the Lekwungen speaking people—the Esquimalt and Songhees Nations. These nations are two of many, made up of individuals who have lived within the porous boundaries of what is considered Coast Salish, Nuu-Chah-Nulth and Kwakwa'wakw Territory (Vancouver Island) since time immemorial. At the CEC we seek to respect, honour and continually grow our own understandings of Indigenous rights and history, and to fulfill our responsibilities as settlers, who live and work directly with the land and its complex, vital ecologies and our diverse, evolving communities.

Compost Education Centre memberships get you free workshops, discounts at garden centres around town and more great perks! Sign up or learn more on our website.
