Event description

Description

Learn easy and cheap ways to grow mushrooms at home. We will focus on innoculating buckets with oyster mushrooms and setting up a mushroom remediation expiriment.

The workshop will focus on hands on outdoor mushroom cultivation and will cover the basics of fungi and the different ways of growing them (mushroom logs, mushroom beds and pathways, companion planting within veggie beds and orchards, composting, and the important role of mycorhizal fungi in the garden and orchard)

We are excited about installing a remediation prject:
Fungi can break down chemical pollutants- including oil, pesticides, and even Agent Orange; suck up heavy metals and radiation; filter water; bust up asphalt; and initiate and support many lifecycles that ultimately regenerate ecosystems. We will talk through some specific applications including how to filter water and detoxify contaminated soil with fungi.

ABOUT THE FACILITATOR
Danielle Stevenson has been growing mushrooms for about 4 years. Her business and its related projects- D.I.Y. Fungi- trades and sells mushroom spawn, and teaches people to grow their own fungal food and medicine. She works on some small-scale bioremediation projects with fungi and other life.

Participants will have the opportunity to buy kits and spores from Danielle to take home and practice what they've learned at the workshop.

FREE ADMISSION
The workshop is free for students and community members but space is limited. Please regiter through eventbrite or email ccgassist@uvic.ca

ABOUT THE CAMPUS COMMUNITY GARDEN

The Campus Community Garden is a collaborative project between UVic students, faculty and staff to promote local and organic food production, education and community building. Our aim is to provide an accessible space where members and volunteers can learn, teach and foster sustainable food production practices within the campus and larger community. We host weekly work parties at our 90-plot garden where volunteers can participate in growing food for the UVSS Food Bank. Drop by the garden anytime and find out more information on our website. Stay updated through our weekly newsletter or facebook page.
