Event description

Description

The return of the graduate conference in the English and Film Studies Department at the University of Alberta coincides with an increase in revivals across multiple arenas, from politics to pop culture. Our conference takes place in the year of the two-hundredth anniversary of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein: A Modern Prometheus (1818), comes hot on the heels of 2017, the five-hundredth anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, and also begins on a day of celebration of all things nerdom: May 4th – Star Wars Day! This presents an ideal opportunity for a sustained interdisciplinary conversation about the power, potential, and implications of returns of all kinds.

Conference schedule outline:

May 4: Registration 12pm-4pm, "soft launch" social 4-7pm

May 5: Registration & panels 8:30am-5:45pm, Creative Night 7:30pm-10pm

May 6: Panels 9:00am-5:00pm, Keynote by Dr Mike Perschon:"'Your Focus Determines Your Reality': Star Wars, Canonicity, and Burning Down the Jedi Tree" 1:30pm-3:00pm
