Toronto! Thank you for rocking with us at GUMBO 8 way back in October. We are kicking off 2017 with another “Back to Back" edition of GUMBO (2 events in 1 night). Last year we took you from #FNLROM at Royal Ontario Museum to Tattoo. This year the party starts on the ice rink at Harbourfront Centre (235 Queens Quay W) for a GUMBO spin on their free DJ Skate Night series featuring DJ Revy B and ends with a Masquerade Jam over at Artscape Sandbox a few minutes away. Masks are mandatory at the jam until 1am and you are highly encouraged to have fun with your outfit. Style code: Swanky. Dapper. Funky. Festive. Whatever floats your boat.
We’ve always been about connecting the musical dots, widely and authentically. February is carnival time from Trinidad to Brazil and it's Mardi Gras season in New Orleans where our special guest DJ RQAway calls home. Last time we were in his city for GUMBO 3, he lit up the dancefloor with party-rocking hometown sounds from Nola Bounce to Second Line brass band music and now we want to give you that taste of New Orleans! S-Quire will hold it down with the Soca and Revy B will keep the Afrobeats flowing. A carnivalesque Afro-diasporic journey into sound taking place in a transformed bank vault? You don't want to miss this!
If you are looking for a mask, we will soon put up a link where you can purchase one and pick it up at the jam or on the ice. We'll be giving away drink tickets for the Masquerade Jam to the first 30 people to come to the DJ booth on the ice rink with their mask on. See you on the 11th.
Note: Artscape Sandbox is a smaller more intimate space than some of our other parties so tickets are limited and will likely sell out fast. Also the party will stop promptly at 2am so don't arrive late!
The Gumbo as it is known in Louisiana is made in different ways. It is called Okro soup in Nigeria, Callalo in Trinidad and Quimbombo in Cuba. Since Wan and Chi started the GUMBO music series, it has traveled from Toronto to New Orleans to Montreal. It's a combination of sounds that overlap, blend and clash to create a delectable music palate. Now going on its 9th edition. GUMBO has quickly gained notoriety as a sweaty dancey sure thing wherever and whenever it touches down.
GUMBO is the link between Afrobeats and Soca that intersects with Reggae/Dancehall and overlaps with Soukous, Kompa, Baille Funk and Afro House, with a mix of Soul, Hip-Hop and R&B. They feed off each other and they feed us. Just Imagine Black Coffee + Shabba Ranks + Machel Montano + WizKid + Rebirth Brass Band all up in the sound system and you get a GUMBO party. Join the WeAreGumbo group on facebook and follow the #WeAreGumbo hashtags for more details on this special edition.
Our events usually sell out or hit capacity so we highly recommend buying advance tickets or arriving early to avoid dissapointment.
